{"id":3085,"date":"2025-10-17T10:53:52","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T10:53:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aitadal.com.pk\/eng\/latest\/shc-orders-report-on-animals-health-and-living-conditions-at-karachi-zoo-pakistan\/"},"modified":"2025-10-17T10:53:52","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T10:53:52","slug":"shc-orders-report-on-animals-health-and-living-conditions-at-karachi-zoo-pakistan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aitadal.com.pk\/eng\/latest\/shc-orders-report-on-animals-health-and-living-conditions-at-karachi-zoo-pakistan\/","title":{"rendered":"SHC orders report on animals\u2019 health and living conditions at Karachi Zoo &#8211; Pakistan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dawn.com\/large\/2025\/10\/171500082d4a423.webp\" \/><\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>The Sindh High Court (SHC) has directed authorities to submit a report on the health and living conditions of all animals at Karachi Zoo, following Tuesday\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1948876\/big-win-for-rano-shc-directs-karachi-zoo-to-move-distressed-female-brown-bear-to-a-sanctuary-within-2-days\">transfer<\/a> brown bear Rano to a sanctuary for medical care.<\/p>\n<p>The case of Rano, a female Himalayan brown bear who stirred public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1903179\">outcry<\/a> over her ailing health in the zoo, has brought into sharp focus the neglect of animals kept in captivity in Karachi. Rano\u2019s relocation was finally ordered on Tuesday by the SHC after a petition was submitted to recognise her deteriorating condition.<\/p>\n<p>During the continuation of the hearing of the case today, the SHC called for a further report on all animals kept in captivity at the zoo.<\/p>\n<p>The report is to include details on animals\u2019 \u201cphysical and psychological health, living conditions, qualifications and training of zoo staff\u201d, as well as alternative plans for animals if they are shifted from the zoo, according to lawyer Jibran Nasir, who was representing Rano\u2019s case on behalf of the petitioner Jude Allen Pereira.<\/p>\n<p>According to Nasir, details of the staff and their qualifications have been summoned from the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), while the report on the zoo has been summoned from a committee already notified by the Sindh government to ensure Rano\u2019s transfer, with the addition of some more members by the court.<\/p>\n<p>The Sindh government has also been directed to visit the zoo and review the facilities provided to animals.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media  sm:w-1\/2  w-full  media--right  media--embed  media--uneven\">\n<p>    <iframe class=\"nk-iframe\" width=\"100%\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" style=\"height:250px;position:relative\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/card\/1931259\" sandbox=\"allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-popups allow-modals allow-forms\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Nasir termed the decision a \u201cmassive achievement\u201d, saying it was made possible by the combined efforts of animal rights activists, experts, and the media that raised awareness of the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply indebted to the empathy, understanding and judicial will of the honourable bench to make a difference in not just the lives of these animals, but for the education and sensitisation of the society at large with regards to animals and their rights,\u201d he told <em>Dawn.com<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"relocation-of-brown-bear\" href=\"#relocation-of-brown-bear\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Relocation of brown bear<\/h2>\n<p>Regarding Rano\u2019s relocation, KMC advocate Barrister Asad Ahmed said, \u201cThe progress report states that first Rano will be transferred to Islamabad, and then to Gilgit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that training would be given in preparation for the relocation.<\/p>\n<p>Nasir also said that the proposal of Wildlife Conservative Javed Mehar could be implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Mehar suggested that Rano could be transported to Islamabad via road as well as by airplane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have all the arrangements made in this regard and have transported animals before,\u201d he told the court, adding that training was administered prior to the transfer of animals.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"justice-calls-for-abolition-of-zoos\" href=\"#justice-calls-for-abolition-of-zoos\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>Justice calls for abolition of zoos<\/h2>\n<p>Justice Iqbal Kalhoro, who heard the case, pointed out in today\u2019s hearing that Rano\u2019s case was not a solitary one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not a problem of any one animal, but many animals are being affected by it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Kalhoro slammed the current treatment of the animals by zoos, saying, \u201cZoos should be abolished and animals should be in natural habitats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that it seemed \u201cvery difficult\u201d to maintain the zoos here.<\/p>\n<p>Advocate Nasir pointed out to the court that the zoos built in the city fell under the KMC, while bringing to the court\u2019s attention the state of facilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do not even have administration people here to tell us whether people can give food to the animals or not,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also pointed out that the Karachi Zoo only employed one veterinarian, to which the KMC advocate responded that no new appointments had been made due to a ban on them.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Kalhoro noted, \u201cI also saw zoos in my childhood \u2014 they were kept in a very bad condition; many animals were injured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou people earn money from the zoo but do not spend it on animals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He lamented that Pakistan had \u201cno concept of a national park\u201d as an alternative to zoos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe zoos outside (the country) are not in such condition; there are no cages there,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to abolish these cages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nasir noted that one of the oldest zoos in Islamabad had also previously been closed.<\/p>\n<p>Kalhoro told the bench, \u201cYou file a petition about whether there should be a zoo or not \u2014 then we will look into the law on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SHC adjourned the hearing for two weeks, seeking a progress report for the next hearing.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"the-neglect-of-rano\" href=\"#the-neglect-of-rano\" class=\"heading-permalink\" aria-hidden=\"true\" title=\"Permalink\"\/>The neglect of Rano<\/h2>\n<p>Rano was reportedly brought to the Karachi Zoo in 2017, along with an Asiatic black bear who died in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Forced to live in solitary confinement in a barren cell, her \u201cunusual behaviour\u201d was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1890005\">remarked<\/a> on in February in a report by a committee investigating her condition, which suggested she was \u201cunder stress\u201d. The committee recommended her relocation to a sanctuary in Punjab, as well as a DNA test to determine her species.<\/p>\n<p>Animal rights activists say that Rano is a Himalayan brown bear \u2014 a critically endangered species \u2014 and not a Syrian species as claimed by zoo officials.<\/p>\n<p>While the committee expressed satisfaction over the bear\u2019s diet, physical health, and found no wounds\/injuries on her body, it noticed \u201cheavy noise\u201d during the visit.
