The messaging platform is introducing <strong>usernames<\/strong>, giving people a new way to chat while keeping their personal numbers private.<\/p>\n<p>According to the company, users will soon be able to reserve a unique username that can be shared instead of a mobile number. The feature will be available gradually towards the end of this year.<\/p>\n<div>The update aims to enhance privacy, particularly when communicating with individuals for the first time, joining communities, or engaging with businesses and creators. Unlike the display of a phone number, a selected username will be displayed when the feature is available.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>To help users secure their preferred name, WhatsApp has already started allowing early username reservations. If a desired username is unavailable, the app will suggest alternatives through a built-in username generator.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The company also plans to let creators, businesses and organizations claim usernames that match their existing Facebook or Instagram accounts, making it easier to maintain a consistent online identity across Meta platforms.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>WhatsApp said the new system has been designed with privacy in mind. There will be no public username directory, and people will need to know a user&#8217;s exact username before starting a conversation. An optional username key will provide an additional layer of protection by giving users greater control over who can contact them.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Once the feature becomes available in a user&#8217;s region, setting a username will be simple.
