NEW DELHI: The Government of India has announced to waive visa requirements for visitors from Thailand as a reciprocal measure, it was revealed on Wednesday.
Thailand waived visa requirements for Indian nationals from May 2024 to November 2024 after officials in New Delhi announced the move.
As part of the measures, Thai nationals will be able to enter India without the need for a visa from July 1. Requirements will be waived for a period of six months.
It is also expected that the arrangement – which is currently temporary – could be changed to a permanent arrangement to ease restrictions for visitors from both sides.
It should be noted that with each passing day, Thailand is focusing on the tourism sector with clear results. For example, 14.3 million tourist arrivals were recorded from January to May 26 this year and authorities have set a target of welcoming a record 40 million foreigners by the end of the year.
Thailand welcomed 39.9 million tourists in 2019 before the pandemic and the country appears to be on track to meet the target with a relaxed visa system and major changes being announced.
Thailand has been negotiating visa-free agreements with other countries and is seeking Schengen visa relaxation through intense lobbying. The government has signed a visa waiver agreement with China on a permanent basis since March this year.
