ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has approved the deployment of National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) in Gilgit-Baltistan to improve traffic flow on the Karakoram Highway, here on Friday.
As per the reports, the prime minister approved the project on the request of Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan to prevent accidents on the Karakoram Highway.
It is pertinent to mention that on May 3, at least 20 people were killed and 21 injured in a passenger bus accident on the Karakoram Highway in Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan.
According to District Rescue Officer of Diamer Shoukat Riaz, the private company’s bus was going from Rawalpindi to Gilgit when the driver lost control of the vehicle near Gunar Farm.

Rescue 1122 and other emergency response teams launched a rescue operation and shifted the injured to Chillas Hospital for immediate medical treatment. Rescue sources said the death toll could rise further as most of the injured were in critical condition.
An emergency has been declared in the hospital with an urgent appeal for blood donation for the injured.
