ISLAMABAD: NEPRA has completed hearing on tariff revision applications filed by seven Independent Power Producers (IPPs). If approved, consumers could get a relief of 50 paisa per unit, saving a total of Rs 920 billion.
The hearing was held on applications filed by seven IPPs under the 2002 Power Policy, including Nishat Chunian Power, Nishat Power, Narowal Energy Limited, Liberty Power Tech Limited, Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited, Sapphire Electric Power Limited, and Safe Power Limited. The applications are aimed at reducing the cost of power generation.
Key issues discussed included exchange rate adjustment mechanism, payment system under the “take or pay” model, and insurance cap regulations. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) informed NEPRA that the agreements with these IPPs have been finalized, and the IPPs have waived off loans worth over Rs 2,000 crore. 11 billion in late payment surcharges.
These negotiations may result in a reduction in electricity tariffs by 50 paise per unit. NEPRA has completed the hearing and the decision will be announced later.
