ISLAMABAD: A special committee on medical education, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, has introduced new regulations that cap tuition fees for private medical and dental colleges on an annual basis.
The fee cap ranges from Rs1.8 million up to Rs2.5 million per year, which will prohibit colleges from raising tuition fees to excessive levels.
The institutions currently charging less than the specified fee range will maintain their current annual fees and will only be given a nominal cost of living raise each year due to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This should relieve financial pressure on students, and raise the overall quality of the medical profession in Pakistan.
Additionally, the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) will monitor compliance with the regulations and will approve any requests to raise fees based on the consumer price index or annual cost of living rate of inflation.
The policy will apply to all private medical colleges, including Aga Khan University. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar stated that the government is committed to ensuring fairness for the students in medical education and acknowledges the importance of systematic and transparent policies to improve the healthcare sector.
This is good news for students wanting to pursue education in medical and dental education in Pakistan.
