LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced the formation of a consultative council aimed at resolving the issues faced by minority communities and promoting interfaith harmony in the region.
Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora has been appointed as the chairman of the newly formed council. Senior political leader Kamran Bhatti has been named the vice-chairman while Aqib Alam has been named the convener. The minority consultative council will consist of 38 members, representing different communities including Sikhs, Muslims, Hindus and women.
The council will have a term of three years, with the government retaining the power to dissolve it before its expiry, if necessary. All members, including the chairman, vice-chairman and convener, will serve without compensation. The Punjab Chief Minister has the power to suspend or dismiss any member, including the chairman, vice-chairman or convener, if necessary.
The council will provide advice to the provincial government to resolve the issues of minority communities, protect their rights and suggest development measures. Ramesh Singh Arora emphasized that the government’s main objective is to improve the quality of life of minority communities in Punjab.
