ISLAMABAD: BYD is preparing to introduce its eagerly awaited pickup truck, the BYD Shark 6, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that is poised to disrupt the local market.
The company has recently alluded to the launch on Instagram with the words “COMING SOON,“ accompanied by a photo of the pickup in action.
Previously, the Shark 6 had a visible presence at the Opening Ceremony of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which provided significant exposure during one of the biggest sporting spectacles in Pakistan.
The BYD Shark 6 is a pickup truck with off–road usability and hybrid efficiency – with a dual-cab form factor, it can likely tie utility and sustainability together in a package.
The specifications for the Pakistan version haven’t been fully revealed yet, however, the international versions suggest the pickup will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain that enables driving short distances on electric–only power, with petrol power utilized for longer distances. Some features of interest include:
- Powertrain: A 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine paired with dual electric motors, delivering 321kW output and 650Nm torque
- Range: Up to 85km on electric power alone and a combined range of 800km on a full charge and tank.
- Performance: 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds, with a towing capacity of 2,500kg and a payload of 790kg.
- Design: Modern exterior with a wide stance and aggressive front grille, along with tech-forward interior features like a large touchscreen infotainment system and advanced driver-assistance systems.
The electrified capabilities of the Shark 6, without losing the power output, have the potential to challenge traditional diesel-powered pickups in Pakistan.
We do not have a launch date or pricing yet, but it‘s anticipated that more information will be available shortly. If the price is reasonable, the BYD Shark 6 will change the landscape of Pakistan’s market, and it‘s an interesting alternative to pickup trucks such as the Toyota Hilux Revo, ISUZU D-Max, and JAC T9 Hunter.
