ISLAMABAD: The official X (formerly Twitter) account of the Pakistani government, @GovtofPakistan, has been blocked in India following a legal demand. Users trying to view the account from within the country received a message that said: “Account blocked @GovtofPakistan’s account has been blocked in India in response to a legal demand.”
The move comes amid rising diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan, following a series of incidents that have further strained bilateral relations. However, the account is accessible to users outside India.
This is not the first time that the Pakistani government’s social media presence has been restricted within Indian borders. Similar actions were taken in July and October 2022, in response to so-called legal demands.
The blocking of government accounts underscores the growing digital dimensions of geopolitical conflicts in South Asia, where online platforms are increasingly being leveraged—or constrained—as tools of statecraft and sovereignty.
Neither X nor the Indian government have publicly disclosed the specific legal basis for the latest action.
