NDMA Issues Severe Weather Warning for Multiple Regions of Pakistan

On Thursday, the NDMA issued a Severe Weather Warning for several areas of Pakistan.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has made a weather warning alert for the country for the next few hours, indicating heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, strong wind, urban flooding and possible flash floods in different parts of the country.
At present, a bunch of areas can get extreme weather activity with the onset of monsoon conditions. All citizens have been warned to be alert and watchful and to keep a close check on weather warnings in the area.
The NDMA has identified the risk of mountain and northern regions being subject to flash flooding, landslides and glacier related events in the event of heavy rainfall. Valley areas close to rivers, streams and at-risk areas are recommended to stay on guard because of the potential for rapid rises in water levels.
Heavy rainfall may also cause temporary urban flooding in low-lying areas in major cities, authorities added. Due to the extreme weather, commuters have been warned to “not travel unless necessary” and “to follow the guidance of local authorities.
The storm in development is consistent with this season’s seasonal forecasts, said the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC). Risk assessment and precautionary measures have already been disseminated to Provincial and District levels to assist in preparedness measures by disaster management agencies.
To ensure safety, citizens in flood-prone areas, mountainous and glacier-sensitive areas have been advised to keep a close check on official warnings. Emergency response teams are on standby to respond to any weather related incidents when needed.
The authorities have again stressed on the need of awareness and preparedness on the part of the public as the weather conditions are changing in various parts of Pakistan.
