Pakistan Moves Towards Complete Adoption of e-Passports for International Travel

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided to gradually transition from traditional machine-readable passports to a fully digital e-passport system, a move aimed at enhancing security, reducing fraud, and improving the travel experience for Pakistani citizens.

The announcement was made during a high-level meeting at the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, where officials reviewed ongoing reforms in the passport system.

What Is an e-Passport?

An e-passport is a modern travel document that contains an embedded electronic chip. The chip securely stores important information, including the passport holder’s identity details, biometric data, and digital security features.

Unlike conventional passports, e-passports offer stronger protection against tampering and unauthorized duplication.

Improved Security and Faster Immigration

Officials believe the nationwide shift to e-passports will significantly reduce cases of passport fraud and document forgery.

The new passports are designed according to international aviation standards, allowing travelers to use automated e-gates at many airports around the world. This can help reduce waiting times at immigration counters and make international travel more convenient.

Cashless Payment System Coming to Passport Offices

As part of broader modernization efforts, passport offices across Pakistan are expected to move toward a cashless payment system. The initiative aims to improve transparency, streamline fee collection, and reduce manual processing.

Authorities say the change will make passport-related transactions easier and more efficient for citizens.

Passport Home Delivery Service Under Preparation

Officials also reviewed plans for a future passport home delivery service. Once launched, citizens may be able to receive their passports at their homes instead of visiting passport offices for collection.

The proposed service is expected to benefit overseas Pakistanis and applicants living in remote areas.

Digital Services to Improve Processing Time

The government is also working on integrating digital identity services with passport applications to simplify online submissions and speed up document processing.

These reforms are part of a wider effort to modernize public services and improve convenience for citizens.

A Major Step Towards Digital Transformation

The shift to e-passports represents a significant upgrade in Pakistan’s travel documentation system. Experts believe the move will strengthen security, improve international compatibility, and provide a smoother travel experience for millions of Pakistani passport holders.

Further details regarding the complete transition timeline are expected to be announced by the government in the coming months.
