Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu’s speech before Congress is something that occurs “all the time,” according to a US official. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller stated on Thursday, “so with respect to the hearing, any number of State Department officials testify all the time before Congress.”

He continued, “We see it as an important part of our jobs to support Congress in carrying out its duties, both in terms of policymaking and oversight.” Miller reaffirmed his position that the accusations made against Lu by former Prime Minister Imran Khan were untrue when questioned about them.

“To start with, the fundamental accusations made against Assistant Secretary Lu are untrue,” he declared. “They have never been true. You’ve undoubtedly heard me say that more than once, twice, or even 10 times.

Lu has been called to testify before a subcommittee of the Congress’ Foreign Affairs committee. Lu is the Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs. The hearing on Pakistan’s democracy’s future is set on March 20.

Khan had identified Lu as the central figure in the scheme involving the “cipher.” According to the former prime minister, Lu told a Pakistani ambassador that successful passage of the motion of no confidence was necessary for better ties between the US and Pakistan.
