ISLAMABAD: The two Senate seats from Islamabad are being contested by four people, one of which is former finance minister Ishaq Dar. As the joint candidate of the ruling coalition, Dar is running for a technocrat seat, according to the preliminary list of candidates. The candidate for the Sunni Ittehad Council is advocate Ansr Kayani. The Peoples Party’s Rana Mahmoodul Hasan is running for the general seat in Islamabad, whereas the Sunni Ittehad Council’s candidate is Farzand Hussain Shah.

Members of the National Assembly will cast their votes in the federal capital to choose senators for the Senate, one for the general seat and another for technocrats like Ulema. The four provincial assemblies will choose senators for seven general seats, two seats for women, two seats for technocrats from each province including ulema and one seat for non-Muslims from Sindh and Punjab.

Tuesday is set aside for the examination of nomination papers for the 48 open Senate seats. On the 26th of this month, the revised list of candidates will be made public. Nominees will have until the 27th of this month to withdraw their papers. The polls are expected to open on the second day of the next month.
