While the interior ministry and Punjab were still at odds over his appointment, the new Islamabad IG assumed office 22 days after his notification of appointment.

Rizvi was appointed after former IG Police Akbar Nasir Khan relinquished the charge on March 30. The new IG assumed office after the Punjab government relieved him.

He was a member of the 31st Common batch of the PSP and served as deputy inspector general of operations in Lahore before. In nine districts of Punjab, he has also held positions as deputy inspector general, senior superintendent of police, assistant superintendent of police, and chief of municipal police.

Ali Nasir Rizvi has also served in Balochistan.

According to a statement from the Islamabad Police, Ali Nasir Rizvi,  has assumed the position of inspector general of police in Islamabad. The statement also stated that prior to taking over, the recently appointed head paid a visit to the Martyrs Memorial for Fateha.
