To reduce subsidy-related debt, the outgoing federal government has increased gas prices for the second time in recent months, while Pakistanis continue to bear the burden of record electricity and gas prices.
The increase was intended to satisfy International Monetary Fund (IMF) requirements. In addition, recent price increases are a component of more extensive gas sector reforms, which include the elimination of subsidies.
This time, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) increased Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL) gas rates by more than 35 and 8 percent, respectively.
