LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly will choose a new chief minister today (Monday), and Maryam Nawaz, senior vice president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), is expected to win the position because her party holds a majority in the province parliament following the general elections on February 8.
Maryam will become Pakistan’s first-ever female chief minister if she wins the election. The newly elected Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan, has called the meeting to order at 11 a.m. In the provincial assembly, 224 MPAs presently support the PML-N.
With the backing of 103 MPAs, Aftab Ahmad Khan, a senior leader in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), is the candidate put out by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and Maryam’s opponent.

In the Punjab Assembly, Aftab represented the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) three times: in 1988, 1993, and 2002. He became a member of the PTI in 2013 and is currently in his fourth term.

A candidate for the CM position must receive the support of the majority, or 187 of the 327 members of the house, in order to be elected. Prior to the assembly session, the parliamentary parties of the PML-N and SIC are anticipated to have separate meetings.
