The federal government announced a significant rise in machine-readable passport fees on Wednesday in the country. Citizens will have to pay an additional 50% to get the basic travel document.
The government has raised fees for both normal and urgent categories, putting an additional strain on Pakistani residents who are already struggling financially.
Directorate General of Immigration and Passports also shared notification in this regard. The notification noted a major increase in the passport fee, with the new prices ranging from Rs 45,000 to Rs 27,000.
The recent move by the government to raise passport fees has raised serious concerns among those who are already struggling with inflation and trying to settle abroad.

A regular 36-page passport valid for five years now costs Rs 4,500, up from Rs 3,000 under the revised fees.
The standard charge for a 72-page regular passport with a five-year validity period has been hiked to Rs8,200, while the fee for a 100-page passport has been raised to Rs 9,000.
The regular charge for a 100-page passport with a 10-year validity period has been hiked to Rs13,500.
