ISLAMABAD: Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly (NA) Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah on Saturday took notice of the supply of contaminated water in Parliament House and Parliament Lodges.
The problem of polluted water was highlighted in a research report by the Pakistan Council for Research in Water Resources (PCRWR), Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Government of Pakistan has directed the PCRWR to monitor water sources including bottled and mineral water brands and publicize the results to create public health awareness.
The Deputy Speaker expressed deep concern over the unsafe water supply in Parliament House and Lodges.
He directed the management of the National Assembly Secretariat to take water samples from the Parliament House and Lodges and conduct an immediate and thorough investigation by the authorized laboratory.
Apart from this, he directed action against the persons responsible for water supply in the Parliament House and Lodges in the light of the investigation.
The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly observed that the use of contaminated water could pose risks to the health of parliamentarians and staff members in Parliament House and Parliament Lodges.
The NA Deputy Speaker added: “Consumption of polluted and harmful water can lead to infectious diseases like hepatitis, TB and kidney diseases.”
He directed the PCRWR to inspect the filters and sanitation of the filtration plant installed in the Parliament House and Lodges and submit a detailed report.
Recently, the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly stressed the need to ensure economy and quality while maintaining Parliament lodges and MNAs’ hostels.

He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting with senior officers of Capital Development Authority (CDA) at Parliament House Islamabad.
He asked the concerned authorities to ensure all possible measures for utilization of public money keeping in mind long-term efficiency and sustainability.
Mr. Shah had expressed his displeasure over the lack of cleanliness and poor standard of maintenance in Parliament lodges and MNAs’ hostels.
Taking cognizance of the allotment issues to MNAs, Mr. Shah also issued instructions to prepare a uniform and transparent policy for smooth allotment and maintenance of Parliament Lodges.
He said that ensuring uniform parameters in maintaining Parliament Lodges would save public money. Furthermore, he directed the CDA to adhere to quality standards regarding sustainability and optimal use of public money.
The meeting was attended by senior officers of Capital Development Authority and National Assembly Secretariat.
