ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Senator Yusuf Raza Gilani was nominated as the party’s candidate for the position of Chairman Senate on Thursday.
The party secretariat declared his nomination.
At the moment, Gilani has the backing of 54 senators, including 24 from the PPP, 19 from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and 4 from the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP).
Additionally, he may receive backing from five senators from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and three from Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).
Meanwhile, twenty senators support the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Prime Minister Gilani presided over the country from 2008 until the Supreme Court invalidated his candidacy in 2012. He began the process of impeaching then-President Pervez Musharraf as soon as he took office.
In July 2010, the PPP Senator founded the University of Swat. In addition, he contributed to the resolution of the March 2009 legal situation and the advancement of nuclear energy projects in Pakistan. In the Senate, he led the opposition from 2021 to 2022 as well.
