At least 17 people were killed and 70 injured when a truck carrying pilgrims fell into a ravine in Balochistan’s Hub district on Wednesday night, rescue and police said.
The authorities then corrected the first report that stated 35 people had died. The victims were taken to Karachi’s Edhi Morgue, where 17 of them were identified and the remaining two will be identified by DNA matching.
Speaking to reporters outside the morgue, Sakro SDPO Wajid Ali said the driver was among the injured and had been arrested.
The truck headed toward Darga Shah Noorani crashed into a ridge close to Ayan Peer, according to the police.
According to locals and police, there were about 120 passengers on board.
Rescue personnel were concerned that the number of fatalities would increase. According to sources, about thirty Edhi ambulances arrived at the scene of the collision.

Police said that the pilgrims belonged to Thatta of Sindh.
The Balochistan government said that it was grieved over the incident, a statement said. The provincial government has imposed an emergency at the Jam Ghulam Qadir Hospital in Hub.
Salman Abdullah Murad, the deputy mayor of Karachi, also expressed his sorrow over the incident and said that the injured would receive all city amenities.
