ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistani bureaucrat Roedad Khan passed away on Sunday after witnessing the country’s various political ups and downs since it gained independence in 1947. 

Former civil servant and politician Roedad Khan passed away at the age of 101 in Islamabad on Sunday. Former bureaucrat Khan was laid to rest after the Zuhr prayers at the H-11 graveyard in the federal capital. 

Taking on X, Senator Mushahid Hussain mourned the passing of Roedad Khan and paid rich tribute, referring to him as a national icon and legend.

He said, “Legend, Roedad Khan, 101, lived a full life of service to Pakistan during our tumultuous periods + post-retirement: pioneered Environmental Protection for Islamabad.”

 Mushahid Hussain Syed credited him for authoring several books and championing human rights. “Authored books & became a Bold Activist for Democracy & Human Rights! Truly a unique, multifaceted personality of our times! He will be missed by his countless admirers,” he wrote on X.

“Roedad Khan passed away today at 101,” senior journalist Hamid Mir wrote on social media platform X. 

 journalist Moeed Pirzada wrote, “Roedad Khan was a living walking history of Pakistan, with his departure country has lost its connection with the past – and is hurtling like a spaceship into an uncertain unknown future.”

Roedad Khan was born on September 28, 1923, in the city of Mardan before the country gained its independence in 1947. After entering the Pakistan Civil Service in 1949, he joined the District Management Group and held many prestigious roles during his distinguished civil service career.

Khan served with five presidents and three former prime ministers. He served as the secretary-general of the interior ministry and as a former adviser to the prime minister. 

He also remained as the chief secretary of Sindh and KP and was also appointed as the managing director of Pakistan Television. He also served as the secretary of the ministries of information, labor, tourism, and interior throughout various governments.
