LAHORE: After the successful negotiations between the district administration and tandoor owners, the nanbais (tandoor owners) have called off their strike for today.
The Nanbai Association declared a strike on Wednesday in protest over Punjab’s roti and naan prices.
15,000 tandoor owners in the city have reportedly decided to postpone today’s strike following fruitful discussions with the district government.
The owners of the tandoors presented the negotiation team with their demand for a flour subsidy, stating that a 20 kg bag of flour needed to be provided for Rs 1700.
The negotiating team announced that they would present the tandoor owners’ demands to the Punjab government.
Tandoor owners have claimed that the district administration has agreed after which roti will be sold at Rs 16 and naan at Rs 25, however, the district administration says that roti will be sold at Rs 16 and naan at Rs 20.
While Waheed Abbasi, Senior Vice President of the Nanbai Association, has stated that time has been given to the district administration to address their demands, Deputy Commissioner Lahore Rafia Haider has threatened to take stern action against those who sell bread at exorbitant prices.
Nanbais expressed grief when Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz declared last month that bread will now cost Rs. 16 throughout the province. They refused to sell and demanded to fix the new price of bread.
