Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) authorities announced the implementation of the midday break from June 15 to September 15, 2024, here on Friday.
This interval is being implemented for the 20th consecutive year. It prohibits direct sunlight and work in open air areas between 12.30 pm and 3.00 pm in the UAE.
How will the penalty be recovered?
The authorities will impose a fine of Dh5,000 on each employee working during the lunch break, which will increase to Dh50,000 if multiple employees are working during the break.
Khaleej Times quoted UAE officials as saying that some jobs are exempt from this policy.
Works related to water supply or electricity, reducing traffic, laying asphalt or concrete on road works and other basic services can continue during the afternoon break.
Companies will have to apply for a permit to continue operating during the break.
Employers need to provide materials such as parasols and shady areas to protect employees working under direct sunlight. There should be fans and clean drinking water as well as first aid kits at workplaces.

The implementation of the mid-day break will benefit the UAE business community and the private sector in the country, The Khaleej Times quoted Mohsin Al-Nassi, assistant under-secretary for inspection affairs at the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE), as saying.

The ministry will also launch awareness campaigns and field visits to workplaces to ensure compliance.
