Interior Ministry forms joint investigation team to curb social media campaign.

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior has taken a decisive step to counter misleading campaigns on social media against Supreme Court judges by establishing a Joint Investigation Team (JIT).

According to the ministry’s notification, Additional Director General of FIA Cyber Crime Wing, Jay IT, will serve as the convener of the JIT. The team will also include representatives from IB, ISI, and DIG Islamabad Police Jay IT, along with a representative from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

The notification specifies that the IB and ISI representatives in JIT will be officers of Grade 20. The JIT’s primary responsibility will be to identify individuals involved in running defamatory campaigns against Supreme Court justices, ensuring legal action against them, and proposing measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

The JIT will thoroughly investigate the alleged campaigners against the Supreme Court judges on social media, seeking to bring them to justice. The notification further mentions that JIT will provide an initial report to the Ministry of Interior within 15 days.

It is noteworthy that legal bodies in the country, including the Pakistan Bar Council and Supreme Court Bar Association, have called for strict action against those running malicious campaigns on social media targeting Chief Justice Pakistan Justice Faez Isa. Representatives from the Islamabad Bar and Supreme Court Bar, during a press conference in Islamabad, demanded robust measures from FIA and IB against such elements. The formation of the JIT aligns with these demands, reflecting the government’s commitment to ensuring accountability and safeguarding the reputation of the judiciary.
