ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has decided that old meters will be replaced with Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology to eliminate electricity theft and improve billing accuracy.
IESCO CEO Dr Amjad Khan said that AMI meters will also be helpful in a significant reduction in overloading on the power distribution system, enhance recovery rates, incidents of transformer and meter burnouts, and line losses.
In a press conference, he further stated, “In the initial phase, the old meters of more than 1.2 million consumers in Rawalpindi city, Rawalpindi cantt Circles, and Taxila division are being replaced with AMI meters free of charge.”
More than 40,000 old meters of various tariffs have been replaced with AMI meters in Rawalpindi city and Rawalpindi cantt circle so far and the initial phase will be completed by June 2026, involving the installation of 1.2 million meters, he stated. “Two contractors have been hired to install approximately 2,000 AMI meters daily in the specified circles.
Moreover, Iesco General Manager Development Faisal Sharif said that AMI technology will help automatically register the complaints in Iesco’s system regarding any fault in electricity. The monitoring of electricity usage and potential bills will now be under the control of the consumers themselves, he said.
AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) is a two-way communication system to collect detailed metering information throughout a utility’s service industry. AMI is typically automated and allows real-time, on-demand interrogations with metering endpoints.
IESCO CEO Amjad Khan said that AMI meters will revolutionize the country’s power sector and provide excellent services to esteemed consumers.
