ISLAMABAD: Amid a tax-heavy budget, the federal government approved another increase in the base electricity tariff for commercial, bulk, and agriculture consumers, sources said on Thursday.
The federal cabinet approved an increase of Rs8.04 in the base tariff for commercial consumers. From July, the per-unit rate for commercial consumers would reach Rs77.15.
Furthermore, the cabinet gave the nod to an increase in the basic electricity price of agriculture consumers by Rs6.62, and Rs5.96 for bulk consumers. The government has approved an increase of Rs6.98 per unit in the electricity tariff for general services.
According to the details, the federal cabinet approved a hike in base electricity tariff through circulation summary. After the increase, the base tariff for agriculture consumers would be hiked to Rs46.83 from the ongoing month (July).
Similarly, after an increase of Rs5.51 per unit, bulk consumers would pay Rs59.96 a unit from July. After the hike, the per unit tariff for general services would reach Rs61.03 from July onwards.
However, the cabinet maintained the base tariff of electricity for industrial consumers. The Power Division has informed the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) of the federal cabinet’s decision.
Earlier, the federal cabinet approved the hike of Rs7.12 per unit in the base electricity tariff. The average basic power tariff has been increased to Rs.35.50 per unit.
However, all domestic consumers up to 200 units per month have been exempted from the increase for three months from July to September 2024. The increase in base electricity tariff for domestic and other consumers is proposed to be implemented from July 1.
