KARACHI: A young woman was murdered by her maternal grandfather in an honor killing on Saturday evening in Marfani Goth, within the Awami Colony police precinct, police reported.
According to Korangi-SSP Tauheed Rehman Memon, 20-year-old Shahzadi was killed by her grandfather, Mohammed Sharif, with the help of an axe, at their residence near Bagh-i-Korangi. The police have apprehended the suspect and recovered the axe used in the crime.
Sharif admitted that Shahzadi had married of her own free will in Jamshoro a year ago. He brought her back to their home, where he is accused of killing her.
“This is being treated as an honor killing,” Memon said.
The body has been sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem.
Earlier this week, a couple was killed in Manghopir in another honor-related case. Saira Luqman and her husband, Adil, were reportedly murdered by her relatives at their home in Amir Mohammad Goth. The victim’s family refused to file an FIR, leading the police to register a case on behalf of the state.
In a separate incident, a widow seeking a third marriage was shot dead by her brother in Bahadurabad late Friday night. SSP-East Dr. Farrukh Raza reported that Munir Shaikh killed his 45-year-old sister, Waheeda, over a domestic dispute in their Dhoraji Colony home before fleeing.
According to area SHO Mohammed Naeem Rajput, Waheeda, who had eight children from two previous marriages, wanted to remarry, but her family opposed it.
Such cases are reported daily in Pakistan where women are still treated as dolls and are killed in small fights or misunderstandings by their families.
