ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has set an ambitious target to finalize Pakistan’s Electric Vehicle (E-vehicle) policy by November, following comprehensive consultations with provincial governments and stakeholders.
The policy aims to promote the adoption of eco-friendly electric vehicles, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating environmental pollution.
To achieve this goal, PM Shehbaz has directed the development of a comprehensive financial plan, simplification of licensing regulations for electric vehicle manufacturers, and establishment of recharging stations nationwide.
The government plans to incentivize electric vehicle production, including offering electric motorbikes to high-achieving students from government schools, similar to the previous laptop distribution initiative.
The meeting also discussed introducing electric public transport in Islamabad, with the Capital Development Authority (CDA) tasked with creating a detailed plan.
Notably, 49 licenses have been issued for two- and three-wheeled electric vehicle production since 2022, with 25 factories already manufacturing these vehicles.
Moreover, the first license for domestic production of four-wheeled electric vehicles was granted in September, paving the way for the first locally produced electric car to hit the market by December.
By prioritizing electric vehicles, Pakistan aims to reduce foreign exchange losses due to petrol and diesel imports, decrease air pollution, and promote sustainable transportation.
The government’s commitment to electric vehicle adoption is expected to drive economic growth, create jobs, and contribute to a cleaner environment.
