CALIFORNIA: Netflix is facing a legal challenge from Indian filmmaker Soham Shah, who alleges that the streaming giant’s hit series “Squid Game” plagiarized the plot of his 2009 film “Luck”.
Shah claims that the Korean-language series, created by Hwang Dong Hyuk, borrowed heavily from his thriller movie without permission. He argues that both stories feature a group of desperate individuals competing in a deadly game for a large cash prize, with each participant’s death increasing the potential winnings for the remaining players.
Shah’s lawsuit seeks to block Netflix from further infringing on his copyright and names Hwang Dong Hyuk as a co-defendant.
However, Netflix has denied the allegations, stating that “Squid Game” is an original work created and written by Hwang Dong Hyuk. The company intends to vigorously defend against the lawsuit.
Notably, “Luck” received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, whereas “Squid Game” has achieved immense popularity worldwide.
The second season of “Squid Game” is scheduled to premiere on Netflix on December 26. The court has yet to deliver a verdict on the matter.
