KARACHI: Pakistan is poised to make a significant leap in sustainable transportation by launching its first locally produced four-wheeled electric vehicle (EV) in December. This milestone follows a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, where the promotion of EVs took center stage.
The government has been actively supporting the local production of EVs, issuing 49 licenses for two and three-wheeled vehicles since 2022, with 25 factories already operational.
The first license for four-wheeled EVs was issued in September 2024, paving the way for Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) to commence production at its assembly plant.
The entry of Chinese EV giant BYD into the Pakistani market further underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable transportation.
Moreover, Prime Minister Shehbaz has directed authorities to develop a comprehensive financial model for EVs, highlighting their benefits, including reduced foreign exchange expenditure on petrol and diesel and environmental sustainability.
The government aims to finalize the Electric Vehicles policy by November and improve licensing regulations, engaging all provinces, federal agencies, and stakeholders.
To promote EV adoption, the government plans to distribute e-motorbikes to high-performing students of government schools, similar to the laptop scheme.
Additionally, a comprehensive plan for electrifying public transport in Islamabad is underway, along with establishing recharge stations for electric vehicles along major highways.
The power ministry has drafted standards for EV charging stations, and affordable electricity rates are being considered to support the growth of sustainable transportation in Pakistan.
