Thirteen individuals perished in a fire that broke out at Yanshanpu Village’s Yingcai School.

Thirteen people have died in a school dormitory fire in the central Chinese province of Henan, the official Xinhua news agency said.

The incident happened at Yanshanpu village’s Yingcai School. On Friday night at 11 p.m. (1500 GMT), the local fire department received a distress call. The fire had already taken a terrible toll by the time rescuers arrived on the scene, leaving thirteen people dead and one injured.

Although the fire was put out by the rescue crews in a timely manner at 11:38 p.m., the community was shocked by the number of lives lost. According to reports, the injured survivor is in stable condition and is currently receiving care at the hospital.

According to Xinhua, at least one person connected to the school has been taken into custody while officials look into what caused the incident.

Yanshanpu village, which is outside of Nanyang city, is currently experiencing grief as a result of the unfortunate event. Even with the large population of the city, not much is known about Yingcai School. However, videos posted to social media in the past have shown young kids, even kindergarteners, wearing smocks with the school’s emblem on them. There were even older students doing calligraphy.

The number of children among the deceased was not specified by the official news agency, leaving a gap in knowledge that has led to a flood of condolences and calls for responsibility on Chinese social media.
