ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Islamabad have once again sealed the red zone in the federal capital following a protest called by the Aafia Movement on Sunday.
The organization announced holding a protest in Islamabad today at D-Chowk at 5 pm seeking the release of Dr Aafia Siddiqui, promoting Islamabad police to close down the Red Zone and roads leading to D-Chowk with containers.
However, following the inaccessible D-Chowk, the Afia Movement changed the protest location to the National Press Club in Islamabad’s F-6 sector.
The district authorities have enforced heightened security measures, closing Jinnah Avenue from China Chowk to Express Chowk in both directions. Entry into the Red Zone has been sealed from Nadera Chowk.
In its traffic advisory, Islamabad police suggested citizens to use Margalla Road or Serena Chowk to avoid any travel problems. Officials stressed that no permission had been granted for any protest in the area.
Dr Afia Siddiqui, a Pakistani national, is currently serving an 86-year prison sentence at the Federal Medical Center in Fort Worth, Texas, on charges including attempted murder.
