ISLAMABAD: Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi claimed that 11 Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police officers and 120 Afghan nationals were arrested among Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protesters here in Islamabad on Saturday.
Speaking alongside Inspector General of Punjab Police, Dr. Usman Anwar, Interior Minister described how the protest, led by KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, escalated into violence, including firing at police resulting in injuring several policemen.
According to Naqvi, a total of 564 people were arrested during the crackdown, including 11 KPK police officers who were allegedly involved in the protests.
The minister asserted that while there were wishes for casualties from some quarters, no lives were lost. However, 75 officials of Punjab Police and 31 officials of Islamabad were injured due to firing by the protesters, one of whom is in critical condition.
Naqvi claimed that the aim of the protesters was to stay till October 17 and disrupt the peace of Islamabad, while he praised the police for showing restraint.
Mohsin Naqvi said that at first the police thought that the men were protesters, but it turned out that they were KP policemen, adding that the arrested men were well-trained, armed and used regular weapons.
He further noted that legal action would be taken against those responsible for calling the protest – including the armed protesters – which turned into violence.
