ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education (FBISE) in Islamabad has taken a significant step forward by approving a new grading system and pass percentage policy.
Under this system, students will receive grades instead of numerical marks, and the traditional first, second, and third-position rankings will be abolished.
While FBISE has adopted this new policy, the education boards of Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan have yet to follow suit.
However, Sindh Universities & Boards Secretary Abbas Baloch has confirmed that Sindh is in the process of approving the new grading policy, with a formal notification expected to be issued soon.
According to the Inter Boards Committee of Chairmen, the new grading policy will categorize student performance into 10 distinct grades.
The highest achievement, A++ (Exceptional), will be awarded to students scoring 95% or above. The excellent category is further divided into two sub-groups: A+ (Excellent) for scores between 90-94% and A (Excellent) for scores between 85-89%.
Students demonstrating strong performance will receive B++ (Very Good) for scores between 80-84%, B+ (Good) for scores between 75-79%, and B (Fairly Good) for scores between 70-74%.
Average performers will be categorized as C (Above Average) with scores between 60-69%, D (Average) with scores between 50-59%, and E (Below Average) with scores between 40-49%.
Those scoring below 40% will receive an F (Unsatisfactory) grade. This tiered system aims to provide a more nuanced assessment of student achievement.
The new policy will apply to all education boards in Sindh, which will conduct class IX and XI exams according to the new grading system starting in 2025.
Ziauddin University Examination Board Executive Director Dr. Nasir Ansar has also confirmed that they are fully prepared to implement the new grading policy and conduct exams under it from 2025.
This change aims to standardize and improve the evaluation process across all examination boards in Pakistan, ensuring a more consistent and transparent grading system for students.
The minimum pass percentage has been set at 40%, which will encourage students to focus more on their studies and achieve a better understanding of their subjects.
