Citizens are expressing dissatisfaction over the rising prices of chicken despite the reduction in prices of other basic commodities and the price of chicken is expected to decrease.
Chicken is generally cheap, and its price varies based on a number of factors including supply and demand. The prices of chicken are monitored by the Lahore district government.
Wholesale prices in Lahore
In addition to the retail prices, wholesale rates have also seen an uptick. Live broiler chickens are now selling at Rs 383 per kilogram in the wholesale market, with the retail price standing at Rs 411 per kilogram. Meanwhile, broiler meat is being sold at Rs 595 per kilogram in retail outlets, reflecting the current market trends in the poultry industry.
Egg prices have also remained high, with a standard farm packet of eggs now costing Rs 8,610, further contributing to the financial strain on households.
The rise in chicken prices is largely attributed to supply and demand factors, with poultry shop owners citing production costs and market fluctuations as key reasons for the increase. While chicken remains a relatively affordable source of protein, the recent price hike has drawn criticism, especially as consumers were expecting a relief in food costs in line with the broader economic trends.
The district government in Lahore continues to monitor the situation, with officials expected to review the pricing structure in the coming days. There is hope that the prices will begin to stabilize, offering some respite to the public. However, until then, the rising cost of chicken remains a point of contention for many citizens in Punjab.
