LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz has launched the CM Internship Climate Resilient Leadership Program which aims to enhance environmental responsibility among the youth, here on Thursday.
As per the details, at the event, she inaugurated Pakistan’s first smog hotline “1373” and directed that 1 percent of development project funds be earmarked for tree planting initiatives.
During her address, the CM announced an increase in the honorarium of interns from Rs 25,000 to Rs 60,000, stressing the need for job security for the interns after the programme. She said that environmental internship should not be seen as an opportunity but as an important responsibility to promote a green Punjab.
CM Punjab highlighted the importance of collective action against smog, advocating cooperation between Pakistan and Indian Punjab, saying that smog will not end with the push of a button. The Chief Minister urged the educational institutions to include smog awareness in their curriculum from October 15 to November 15.
The Chief Minister criticized past negligence in environmental management and emphasized the importance of treating environment as a shared responsibility across Pakistan. It reported that measures against animal cruelty had been stepped up, reflecting a commitment to humane behaviour.
Addressing air quality issues, she outlined ongoing efforts to combat smog, including monitoring industrial emissions and proactive measures against pollution from brick kilns and fat smelting factories. Maryam also emphasized that sustainable infrastructure development is important for national development.
Senior provincial minister Maryam Aurangzeb shared insights on new environmental initiatives, including a vehicle inspection system and comprehensive climate change plans. She affirmed Punjab’s leadership role in tackling climate challenges.
Provincial Minister for Information and Culture Azma Zahid Bokhari, Provincial Ministers Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, Sher Ali Gorchani, Sohaib Ahmed Malik, Kazim Pirzada, Ramesh Singh Arora, Ashiq Hussain, Chief Secretary, Secretaries and other officials were also present in the ceremony.
