RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 in Rawalpindi for eight days, from October 11 to 17, in anticipation of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit scheduled in Islamabad from October 15 to 16.
This measure aims to ensure the safety and security of citizens during the high-profile event. As a result, several activities are now prohibited within the city limits, including pillion riding, aerial firing, political gatherings, sit-ins, rallies, and protests.
Additionally, the use of drones, laser lights, and pigeon flying has also been banned, as per an official notification. Law enforcement personnel, however, are exempt from these restrictions.
To further guarantee a smooth and secure experience, a three-day public holiday has been declared in Islamabad and Rawalpindi from October 14 to 16.
The Punjab government has also directed all government hospitals in Rawalpindi to remain on high alert during this period.
The Punjab Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department made this request in a letter, citing instructions from the federal government to make necessary arrangements ahead of the SCO summit.
Moreover, To ensure security during the SCO conference in Islamabad, authorities have ordered wedding halls, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and snooker clubs to remain closed from October 12 to 16.
Police officers have issued notices to business owners, warning of strict legal action against any violations, and have demanded surety bonds to ensure compliance.
In addition, a special traffic plan has also been devised for smooth traffic flow within the twin cities. The Foreign Minister of Pakistan has advised all the foreign delegations to limit their movements within and outside the city and to remain within the designated red zone area to avoid any mishap during the summit.
Earlier, the Punjab govt imposed Section 144 in eight cities affected immediately, from Thursday night October 10, 2024.
According to the orders issued by the Punjab government, Section 144 was enforced in Multan, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Vehari, Pakpattan, Okara, and Wazirabad.
The move will be in effect for three days from Thursday, October 10 to Saturday, October 12 in these eight districts.
