KARACHI: The Italian Navy’s Carrier Strike Group, comprising the Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II jet carrier Cavour and the Alpino frigate, arrived at Karachi naval station for a three-day visit followed by a bilateral exercise.
This historic visit aims to enhance regional maritime security and defense cooperation between Italy and Pakistan. Upon, their arrival, the group was warmly welcomed by Pakistan Navy senior officials and Italian Ambassador to Pakistan Marilina Armellin.

During their stay, a delegation led by the Italian Ambassador to Pakistan and Rear Admiral Stefano Barbieri met with Pakistan Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Abdul Munib to discuss mutual interests, interoperability, and future collaboration.
Karachi Commander Vice Admiral Muhammad Faisal Abbasi also visited the Cavour, receiving a briefing on its capabilities from Italian Commanding Officer Captain Francesco Fagnani.
Ambassador Armellin emphasized the growing friendship between Italy and Pakistan, noting this as the first visit by an Italian aircraft carrier and the fourth by an Italian ship to Karachi.
She highlighted Italy’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Pakistan, ensuring secure international maritime routes, and considering Pakistan a strategic partner for regional security.
In addition, Armellin announced her plans to attend the next IDEAS edition in November with a defense ministry delegation.
The visit underscores the importance of defense in Italy-Pakistan bilateral relations, with Italy participating in Aman Exercises and IDEAS fairs.
