ISLAMABAD: The federal capital has been placed on high alert due to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) conference, resulting in widespread road closures and stringent security measures until late tonight.
The two-day conference, which has already begun, is attended by high-profile dignitaries, including the prime ministers of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as representatives from Iran, India, China, Mongolia, and Turkmenistan.
To ensure the security of the attendees, all main roads leading to the federal capital have been completely blocked. Road Closures include The Expressway to the Old Airport, 26 No. Srinagar Highway (one side closed), 9th Avenue, Taramri, Khana Pul, and Lethrar Road are among the affected routes.
However, some alternative routes remain open, including Park Road, M2, and the Motorway-Srinagar Highway link road. Stadium Road is also accessible, although access to 9th Avenue is restricted; instead, commuters can use the service road alongside 9th Avenue to reach Sector 18.
For those traveling from Lahore to G11, a suggested detour is via M2 and Srinagar Highway. Another recommended route is from Gora Mor to NUST, passing through Shams Colony, Railway Crossing, and H13.
To minimize inconvenience, commuters are advised to avoid unnecessary travel until tonight and follow traffic guidelines and diversions. Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) personnel are deployed at key intersections to guide commuters.
Notably, M1 and M2 motorways remain open, providing some relief to travelers. By staying informed about the latest traffic updates and planning routes accordingly, residents and visitors can navigate the city more efficiently during this time.
