LAHORE: Lahore has once again been named the world’s most polluted city, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 394 recorded on Monday. AQI measures pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3).
It’s worth noting that levels above 100 are considered unhealthy, while anything above 150 is considered extremely unhealthy. The worsening smog situation due to crop burning and industrial emissions has prompted the Punjab government to take immediate action.
Hazardous air quality is causing health problems in Lahore, including respiratory problems, eye irritation and skin infections. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions are particularly at risk.

In response, Punjab Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb launched the ‘Anti-Smog Squad’ during a function in the Agriculture Department. The squad will create awareness among farmers about the dangers of crop residue burning, encourage the use of super seeders and ensure strict action against violators.
The government has also implemented a comprehensive smog policy and included environmental protection in the school curriculum. He urged citizens to report any occurrence of smog through the 1373 helpline, promising prompt action from the anti-smog squad.
