KARACHI: Today Pakistan marks the first death anniversary of renowned Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif, who was tragically murdered in Kenya on October 23, 2022.
Arshad Sharif, a prominent television anchor and investigative journalist, was shot dead in Nairobi, Kenya, under mysterious circumstances.
Arshad Sharif’s untimely death sent shockwaves across Pakistan and the global journalism community. He was known for his fearless reporting and outspoken criticism of the Pakistani government and military establishment.
Throughout his career, Sharif had faced threats, intimidation, and harassment, but continued to uphold the principles of free and independent journalism.
To commemorate the anniversary of his death, various journalist organizations, political parties, and civil society groups are holding memorial services and rallies across Pakistan.
The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has announced a nationwide protest to demand justice for Sharif’s family and to highlight the growing threats faced by journalists in Pakistan.
Sharif’s family, including his wife, Javeria Siddique, and brother, Ashraf Sharif, have reiterated their demand for a transparent investigation into his murder. They have expressed dissatisfaction with the progress made so far, citing a lack of cooperation from Kenyan authorities and alleged attempts to obfuscate the truth.
The Pakistani government has faced criticism for its handling of the case, with many accusing it of failing to provide adequate protection to Sharif and subsequently failing to bring his killers to justice. The opposition parties, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), have demanded a thorough investigation and accountability for those responsible.
International journalist organizations, including the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and Amnesty International, have also called for justice and condemned the Pakistani government’s inaction.
“Arshad Sharif’s murder is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in Pakistan,” said a CPJ spokesperson. “The Pakistani government must take concrete steps to protect journalists and ensure accountability for those responsible for Sharif’s killing.”
As Pakistan observes Arshad Sharif’s death anniversary, journalists, activists, and citizens are renewing their commitment to press freedom and the protection of journalists.
