ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has taken disciplinary action against four of its members of parliament, issuing show-cause notices to Zain Qureshi, Aslam Ghuman, Muqdad Ali Khan, and Riyaz Fatiana.
The notices allege that these members defied the party’s stance on the 26th constitutional amendment, which the party believes is an attempt by the government to undermine the independence of the judiciary.
According to the notice, all PTI MNAs and Senators were instructed not to support the constitutional amendment bill and to refrain from voting on the amendments.
They were also directed to stay in a designated safe place during the voting process. The party’s discipline dictates that all members must follow these instructions, and any violation would be considered indiscipline.
One of the notice recipients, Zain Qureshi, has already denied allegations of supporting the constitutional amendment. In a video statement, Zain revealed that his father, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, advised him to go into hiding to avoid voting on the amendment.
Zain emphasized that he would never support the amendment, labeling reports of his support as “baseless propaganda.” He further explained that his father, who is currently imprisoned in Lahore, instructed him to oppose the amendment at all costs.
This development highlights the ongoing tensions within PTI and the broader political landscape of Pakistan. The party’s stance on the constitutional amendment has been clear, and any deviation from this stance is seen as a serious breach of discipline. The show-cause notices are likely to escalate the situation, leading to further divisions within the party.
