LAHORE: The Environment Protection Department (EPD) in Punjab has taken swift action to combat the escalating air pollution crisis. To safeguard the health of children and the elderly, schools in Lahore will now start no earlier than 8 AM, effective October 28, 2024, until January 31, 2025.
This change aims to minimize exposure to hazardous air conditions during peak morning hours. The air quality of Lahore has worsened during the past few years.
In addition to revised school timings, the EPD has implemented several other measures to curb pollution. Children will assemble indoors, and all outdoor activities have been suspended to prevent prolonged exposure to poor air quality.
Furthermore, a strict ban on fireworks in Lahore will remain in place until January 31, 2025, to reduce particulate matter and toxic emissions.
To tackle vehicular pollution, authorities have launched a crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles, including motorbikes, rickshaws, and buses.
Punjab Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb has urged citizens to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained, emphasizing the critical role individual actions play in mitigating smog buildup.
Moreover, the Punjab government has devised plans for artificial rain and cloud seeding in Lahore to combat the smog problems faced by the citizens of the provincial capital.
Earlier, Lahore was named the most polluted city in the world whereas the quality of air has worsened up to level 156.
