LAHORE: Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat shared an update on school closures amid the worsening smog situation in Lahore and parts of the region.
Provincial capital Lahore tops the list of most polluted cities as school-going students complain of shortness of breath and respiratory problems. Amid wider concerns, Punjab’s education minister signaled the possible closure of schools as the air quality index crossed alarming levels.
Addressing the crisis, Hayat said the government had temporarily adjusted school hours, and said schools could be closed if children’s health deteriorates in the coming days.
He also urged the parents, students and public to join efforts to tackle the smog problem. As Lahore is gripped by severe air pollution, the community is being called upon to take action alongside the government’s efforts.

Lahore, a city of about 15 million people, faces hazardous air quality, with low visibility. Punjab government reports indicate an alarming Air Quality Index (AQI) resulting from pollution from local sources and neighboring Indian cities.
Punjab Govt Speeds Up Measures While measures are being taken, it will take 8 to 10 years to significantly reduce smog levels.
Efforts include dismantling brick kilns, strict monitoring of vehicle emissions, and promoting better waste disposal practices.
