LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has taken a significant step for the journalist community, announcing the provision of plots to 3,200 journalists.
CM Maryam Nawaz directed the Ministry of Information to expedite the development of Journalist Colony Lahore Phase II, ensuring all legal processes are completed promptly.
This development came in a meeting with Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari, where CM Maryam strictly ordered the prompt completion of Journalist Colony Lahore.
Emphasizing the importance of this initiative, Maryam Nawaz stated, “Journalists and the government are like two wheels of the same vehicle; providing plots to journalists is not a favor but their right.”
In addition, CM Punjab also clarified that plot allocations will be based on merit and in compliance with all legal requirements.
The Punjab Ministry of Information plans to invite applications from journalists beyond those affiliated with the Lahore Press Club, with a formal advertisement expected within two to three days.
This initiative builds upon the initial scheme introduced in Lahore in 2004 during Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi’s tenure as Chief Minister, where a housing colony was established near Harbanspura on Canal Road.
This significant step demonstrates the Punjab government’s commitment to supporting journalists and recognizing their vital contribution to the country’s progress.
The applicant should be a resident of the province of Punjab. Residents of concerned district will be given priority. If a Journalist, the applicant should be a Council member of Concerned Press Club, and his/her eligibility should reach PJHF through proper channels on Letter Head of Concerned Press Club.
If an employee of the Information & Culture Department then he/she should have served or will be serving for at least 2 years consecutively.
The following shall be eligible for allotment of Plot as per Punjab Journalists Housing Foundation Act 2004.
- Council members
- Employees of the Punjab Information Department as may be prescribed
- Employees of the broadcast media are subject to the policy determined by the Board
- Provided that an eligible person shall not be allotted more than one plot in all the housing schemes of the Foundation
- An allotted plot shall not be alienated for a period as may be prescribed
