LAHORE: The Punjab government has made a significant decision to outsource 150 Basic Health Units (BHUs) across the province in the initial phase.
This move is aimed at improving healthcare services, particularly in rural areas. Out of the 150 BHUs, approximately 100 will operate during routine hours, while 50 will provide services round-the-clock.
In Lahore, eight BHUs will be contracted out in this first phase, marking a significant step towards enhancing healthcare accessibility.
To ensure the maintenance of these health centers, the government plans to allocate Rs 500,000 annually for each unit. This investment will help maintain the infrastructure and facilities of the BHUs, ultimately benefiting the patients.
To kickstart the project, the Department of Primary Health has requested Rs 1.5 billion from the Provincial Finance Ministry. This funding will likely cover the initial costs of outsourcing, infrastructure upgrades, and staffing requirements.
In another development, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed the authorities to complete the construction and revamping of BHUs and Rural Health Centres (RHCs) across Punjab by March and June 2025, respectively.
Additionally, the government has launched programs like the Field Hospitals Project, which aims to provide quality healthcare services to rural areas.
