LAHORE: A massive crackdown on smog violators in Punjab has resulted in the arrest of over 1,000 individuals for violating standard operating procedures (SOPs), according to the Punjab Police.
In Lahore alone, 73 people were taken into custody, with 186 cases registered, eight arrests, and 20 cases reported in just the past 24 hours. Additionally, five individuals were fined for non-compliance.
The severity of the smog situation has led to drastic measures, including the closure of primary schools in Lahore for a week due to an alarming air quality index (AQI) reading of over 1000.
The smog contains harmful PM2.5 pollutants, known to cause cancer, with concentrations reaching 610 µg/m³. Authorities are urging citizens to take precautions, such as wearing masks and staying indoors.
Despite these warnings, media reports indicate that many are ignoring the SOPs, with rickshaws and vehicles still on the roads, and pedestrians not wearing masks.
To combat this, the government has directed authorities to take strict action against violators, including industrial units, brick kilns, and transportation.
Wear masks when outdoors to minimize exposure to harmful pollutants, stay indoors to avoid breathing in toxic air, Work from home if possible to reduce travel and vehicle pollution, and avoid unnecessary travel to minimize exposure to smog.
The situation remains critical, and citizens are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect their health.
