LAHORE: A disturbing incident of child abuse has surfaced in Lahore, Pakistan, where a 13-year-old housemaid was allegedly subjected to physical torture by a couple and their family member.
The police arrested two members of the family from the Defence Police Station after the victim’s aunt reported the brutal assault. This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the alarming trend of abuse against housemaids, particularly in urban areas, where perpetrators often exploit their influence to evade justice.
In Pakistan, domestic violence is a pervasive issue, with an estimated 10-20% of women experiencing some form of abuse. The problem is deeply rooted in societal norms, including poverty, patriarchalism, and child marriage.
Women in low-income households, especially those married at a young age, are more vulnerable to domestic violence. The lack of education and awareness about women’s rights exacerbates the issue.
