KARACHI: A retired army commando was shot dead in the Defense Housing Authority (DHA) area of Karachi on Wednesday in what police suspect was a botched robbery attempt. The incident took place on 26th Street in the Clifton police station.
According to the police, Saeed, a 45-year-old former member of the Special Services Group (SSG) of the Pakistan Army, withdrew cash from the bank and stopped to smoke a cigarette when the armed assailants approached him.
When he resisted the robbery attempt, the assailants opened fire and escaped with serious injuries. Saeed was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The victim was allegedly carrying Rs. 500,000 and a pistol at the time of the attack, but the robbers took away cash or weapons. Saeed, who was working as a security guard after retirement, was accompanied by a colleague who remained safe during the incident.
Police have obtained CCTV footage showing four accused on two motorcycles involved in the crime. The case has raised concerns over the response of law enforcement agencies, leading to the removal of Clifton’s SHO after authorities took notice of the incident. Sindh Interior Minister Zia-ul-Hasan Linjar has asked for a detailed report.
