LAHORE: The Lahore smog crisis has disrupted the daily life activities of the provincial capital’s citizens, dense smog has severely impaired travel across Punjab, prompting the Motorway Police to close key routes in the morning to ensure traveler safety.
The early closures included sections of Motorway M2 from Lahore to Sheikhupura, Motorway M3 from Lahore to Jaranwala, and Motorway M4 from Gojra to Abdul Hakeem. These measures aim to prevent accidents due to poor visibility.
Currently, the motorways have been opened and commuters can travel without any obstacles, but closures are likely in the evening as smog intensity increases.
On Friday morning, thick smog and fog caused multiple collisions near the Hiran Minar Interchange in Sheikhupura, injuring five people and damaging several vehicles. The injured were promptly taken to the hospital for treatment. Rescue 1122 and Motorway Police teams are conducting operations to assist affected travelers.
To minimize risks, drivers are advised to travel only during daylight hours when visibility is better and to use both front and rear fog lights for safer driving. The Motorway Police spokesperson emphasized, “These closures are necessary for safe travel.”
Traffic remains halted on the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway near Hiran Minar Interchange until rescue efforts are completed.
